Humphrey Bogart was the biggest movie star of all time, according to the AFI


Unlikely features he had for a movie star: he wasn’t handsome or tall, but gruff


Made his big screen debut in 1930 at age 30, and had his first big hit in 1936


Portrayed criminals, private eyes, complex characters, patriots, fighters, and lovers


Humphrey was born on Christmas Day in 1899 and died in 1957 at the age of 57


Rick Blaine, Sam Spade, Phillip Marlowe, and Lt. Queeg are some famous roles


Yet he started out playing whatever role he could get, including an odd cowboy
